Position Summary

At Expanse we believe there's no one single owner of quality, that we collectively own the quality of our products. As such, we're looking for a Head of Quality Assistance to help and guide us in our bid to maintain and improve the quality of our products.

We have a different view of this role than most and we call it Quality Assistance for a reason. The position doesn't come with an official seal or stamp of approval (rubber or otherwise). You won't be the person held responsible if there's a bug found in production. You won't be stuck frantically running manual tests at the end of the sprint to ensure we finish on time (Are you done yet? Can we release now? How about now?)

Instead you'll work with a motivated team to define quality and the metrics by which we will track it. You'll instill the processes and procedures we'll need to live up to that standard. You'll advise our development teams on the creation of their test plans, showing the way yourself if you need to. You'll act as the Quality Product Manager, creating and refining a backlog of test automation stories to ensure the dev teams spend their time coding rather than running manual tests. You'll roll your sleeves up when necessary (or when you want to - we all got into this business because we love coding and all things technical) to do a spot of implementation yourself.

What You’ll Do

  • Audit and evaluate current testing posture; recommend and implement strategy
    • Build a process to execute test plans
    • Generate test exec plan based on sprint features
  • Build and execute a plan to move manual tests to automated tests
    • Slipstream work into sprints for development teams to build
    • Hands-on building of automated tests
  • Build a set of tracking metrics against which to measure progress of above and own the reporting of those metrics as KPIs
  • Provide quality assistance to development teams
    • Review features
    • Suggest test plans
    • Coach and mentor development teams on how to build test plans
    • Review test plans
    • Review execution of test plans
  • Own pre-release validation process
  • Own bug triage and remediation process; work with engineering management to define exit criteria for fixes 
  • Partner with development and DevOps teams to build full CD pipeline 

About You

  • Strong drive to take a fresh look at QA - you've mastered the current state of the art but feel that it's lacking and want to do something different
  • You like to work across technical and business disciplines - it's fun to find out how other teams work and you'll cheerfully adopt their ideas to suit your needs
  • 5+ years of QA team leadership with people management responsibilities - the team will grow and scale with the company and you know how to do that
  • Extensive experience in agile practices of story development and continuous integration
  • Experience designing, developing and managing automated testing
  • Experience testing data analytics services leveraging distributed data stores
  • Experience testing platform APIs
  • Experience testing web-based user interfaces
  • Comfortable working hands-on as an individual contributor as needed
  • Familiarity with performance and capacity management and monitoring tools for application, infrastructure and networks
  • Willing and able to work in San Francisco
