Join our small-but-growing data science team as one of the first members and help us build Discord into the top gaming communications tool. Work closely with teams across the company to use data to help us understand user behavior, make Discord smarter and operate more efficiently at scale. Also, we’d love some help upping our MMR. Just sayin’.
Discord is a small group of passionate gamers whose mission is to bring people together around games. Diversity and inclusiveness are a critical part of how we get there. We believe that with diversity comes a better product, better decisions, and a better work environment. Everyone here is committed to making Discord representative of the world we want to live and play in.
What you'll be doing
Build frameworks using data that empower various teams across the company to make better decisions.
Make Discord smart: Develop and productionize machine learning models that help power key features of discord such as voice chat or content ranking.
Apply advanced statistical techniques to rigorously model user behavior, identify causal impact and attribution, and build and benchmark key metrics.
Design, run, and analyze A/B and multivariate hypothesis tests aimed at optimizing various parts of the Discord apps.
Make business recommendations (e.g. cost-benefit, forecasting, ranking, experiment analysis) and communicate findings to executives, key stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
Here are a few examples of projects you might work on:
Implement and test recommendation models that allow our users to discover content they might enjoy.
Which content partners should we work with to most effectively spread word about Discord?
What characterizes a healthy Discord server, and how can we help more server owners build healthy communities?
What you should have
BA/BS in Computer Science, Math, Physics, Economics, Statistics, or other quantitative fields.
4+ years work experience doing data science (preferably in the tech industry) and proven track record of impacting business or product decisions.
Thorough understanding of common statistical methods and applications (A/B testing, probability, regression)
Fluency in SQL and a programming language such as Python, Java, R, or Scala.
Extensive experience in machine learning, data science and/or at least one statistics package such as SciPy, Pandas, SPSS, or TensorFlow.
Deep understanding of modern machine learning techniques and their mathematical underpinning, such as classification, recommendation systems and natural language processing.
Pro-level ability to synthesize and communicate complex concepts and analyses in simple, easy-to-understand ways.
Awesome attitude and a healthy dose of natural curiosity. Questions have to be answered and our data isn't just going to analyze itself. (We're working on that.)
A love of gaming and familiarity with the games industry.
MS/PhD in Math, Physics, Statistics, Data Science or other quantitative fields.
Experience with large data sets and distributed computing (Hive/Hadoop).
Familiarity with technologies such as Airflow, AWS Redshift, and/or BigQuery to build and optimize production data pipelines.
Ability to work with dashboarding software such as Looker, Chart.io or Google Analytics.
