Kenya - Senior User Researcher at Tala

Tala’s mission is to improve the financial lives of millions of people in developing markets by creating new, accessible financial services. Kenya is our largest market and we’re looking for a whip-smart user researcher to join us to ensure that user insights drive our growth and improve our user experience.The User Researcher will work from our Nairobi office and be a part of Tala’s Product Impact & Insights team.  This team focuses on user research, human-centered design, and concept prototyping.  You will be responsible for ensuring we have the best understanding of our Kenyan customers’ daily lives, attitudes, and behaviors. You will also drive research into product design.  Your stakeholders include both Nairobi and the U.S.-based teams.  You will collaborate across many teams including Data Analytics, UX Design, Product, Credit, Data Science, and Growth--and be at the center of our mission to create financial access, choice and control.

In this role you will : 

  • Bridge user insights and product building
    • Facilitate discovery research activities around need-finding, early/rapid prototyping, and related processes like design sprints
    • Lead complex user research projects - design and deliver high-value studies both in the field and remotely
  • Build a scalable international practice around design and mobile UI/UX research
    • Manage and coach researchers located in emerging markets
    • Hire additional researchers to grow the team as needed
    • Stand up a process of regular user feedback (surveys, user testing) in emerging markets
    • Create user research toolkits to spread best practices across Tala
    • Coach other functions on basic user research
    • Leverage our extensive mobile data to pioneer new research techniques 

What we are looking for:

  • 5+ years’ experience in conducting user research, preferably for a digital mobile product and/or with underserved populations
  • 2+ years’ experience in managing people
  • Demonstrated experience in range of qualitative and quantitative research methods, from in-depth interviews, quantitative surveys, usability testing to A/B testing
  • Demonstrated rigor and detail orientation in analyzing patterns in user research
  • Strong organizational and project management skills to drive a research engagement forward, with remote and occasion in-country support from U.S.-based team members
  • Excellent communication skills, from daily/weekly updates on progress towards goals as well as synthesizing research findings into crisp and concise summaries
  • Fluent in English and Swahili
  • Strong in tools of analysis and synthesis: Excel/GoogleSheets, and PowerPoint/GoogleSlides
  • Excellent grit and drive to thrive in the uncertainty of a startup environment
  • Masters in HCI, international development, anthropology or something similar
